Sycamore Anthracnose
Sycamore anthracnose is a non-fatal disease affecting sycamores. Although it is mostly an aesthetic problem, the disease can increase susceptibility to other problems. The primary host of this distructive fungus is the American sycamore.
Disease Cycle and Symptoms
The fungus is most active during cool, wet springs. It overwinters on stems, twigs or in fallen leaves. During the growing season, it lives within one to two year old twigs; the formation of cankers result. These cankers disrupt the vascular tissue, leading to twig and bud death. Witches' brooms often form; twig or stem die-back, early leaf drop and delayed leafing out are all symptoms resulting from this fungal disease.
Treatment and Control
Macro-infusion of a systemic fungicide into the root flares of the tree provides protection from within the tree. This is because the fungicide is then distributed throughout the entire canopy of the tree thereby protecting susceptible twigs. Treatment is guaranteed for two years.
