Spring dead spot is caused by the fungi Ophiosphaerella herpotricha and Ophiosphaerella korrae, and perhaps yet unidentified pathogens. It affects Bermuda grass and is most severe on hybrid Bermuda. Disease can occur from late winter to early spring.
Signs and Symptoms
Circular patches of dead turf grass become apparent as the turf greens up in spring. Patches may reach several feet in diameter. Affected patches of Bermuda are slow to fill in by surrounding grass.
Favorable Conditions:
Disease occurrence is favored by cool to cold weather. Bermuda grass is more susceptible to injury from this disease if it is three years or older.
Cultural Prevention and Control
Keeping thatch in check may aid in preventing this disease.
