Environmental Landscaping
We have found that Enviroscaping, environmentally focused landscaping, is an excellent way to develop beautiful landscapes using minimal resources while providing maximum natural habitats for wildlife.
Enviroscapes use less water and require less maintenance than traditional landscapes. Here are a few of the principles involved:
Design
- Install planted borders around the perimeter of your property.
- Borders should have long flowing curves for mowing efficiency.
- Reduce the amount of turf in your landscape by making large borders.
- Put trees, shrubs and flowers in borders instead of in the lawn.
- Mimic nature by planting groups of trees and shrubs instead of single specimens.
- Use carefully designed hard surfaces such as patios and walkways to reduce maintenance.
- Improve the soil by incorporating organic material and using organic mulches.
- Use ground covers whenever possible to eventually reduce the need for mulch.
Plants
- Use adapted trees, shrubs and flowers to reduce maintenance.
- Select disease and insect resistant varieties.
- Group plants with similar water needs together and zone your irrigation system accordingly to make watering efficient.
- Keep in mind mature plant sizes when you space plants for planting.
Maintenance
- Let grass clippings drop in place when you mow. Clippings return nutrients to the soil.
- Mow frequently to keep blades from clumping on the lawn.
- Use a side discharge mower to reduce fuel consumption.
- Mulch borders with organic mulch to keep weeds down and reduce the need for watering.
- Prune shrubs and trees informally and reduce the frequency of pruning.
