Several fungal species of fungi cause Fairy Ring. All turf grasses can be affected. Disease symptoms may appear anytime from early spring to late fall.
Signs and Symptoms:
Fairy ring first appears as circular patches of dark green, fast growing areas of turf. These patches enlarge into rings. Later, a ring of dead grass may occur on the inside rim of the green grass. When weather is moist, mushrooms may also appear in the outer ring. When cutting into the thatch layer of the ring area, a white, mat-like material and musky odor may be left behind.
Favorable Conditions:
Mild temperatures and moisture favor the growth of this fungus; however, browning of turf may occur during hot, dry conditions. Buried tree stumps, wood, or other sources of dense organic material provide a good environment for the development of this disease.
Cultural Prevention and Control:
Keeping turf areas well aerated and irrigated may reduce disease occurrence.
