Lawns are our environmental helpers
By Larry Ryan
Lawns and trees enhance life in the city. Special moments can be as simple as the smell of fresh grass in the spring or the silhouette of your favorite tree against the sky.
Our landscapes soften the urban environment and lawns tie your home to the community in which you live. Lawns are the green carpet you look across, the padded surface your children play on, and the magic blanket that holds the soils of our earth in place.
In addition, the lawn absorbs rain water to replenish underground aquifers, adds cooling moisture to our hot summer air, removes harmful pollutants and adds needed oxygen. Not bad for something you take for granted.
Some people say lawns are environmentally unfriendly. This simply is not true. This being said, lawns don't belong everywhere. There needs to be a balance between your lawn and landscape. A good landscaper should know where to put the forest (your trees and shrubs), the flowers, and how much lawn makes sense for your property.
